ZPMC launches first of four battery-equipped heavy-lift vessels for Chinese-Polish shipping firm
Summary By: eMotoX
Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) has unveiled the first of four new heavy-lift vessels commissioned by the Chinese-Polish shipping joint venture Chipolbrok. These 38,000-ton multi-purpose ships are designed to enhance the company’s global fleet dedicated to transporting oversized and heavy cargo, such as wind turbine components, large construction machinery, and specialised industrial equipment. The launch took place at ZPMC’s Qidong Marine Engineering facility, marking a significant step in expanding Chipolbrok’s capabilities in heavy-lift maritime logistics.
Each vessel incorporates a 1,000 kW battery system, enabling electric propulsion while in port or operating at low speeds, which represents a move towards greener shipping operations. Additionally, the ships are equipped with high-voltage shore power connections, allowing them to draw electricity directly from port facilities when docked, further reducing emissions. The propulsion system features ducted propellers and rudder bulbs, which contribute to a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 4% at cruising speeds, reflecting a focus on operational sustainability.
The ships measure 182 metres in length with a beam of 30 metres and a depth of 17 metres, capable of maintaining a service speed of 14.5 knots. They are outfitted with three 350-ton cranes, designed and manufactured by ZPMC, providing a combined lifting capacity of 700 tons. The vessels also boast a full-length open cargo deck alongside two extra-long cargo holds, the largest stretching 77 metres, offering versatile cargo handling options suited to a wide range of heavy-lift transport needs.
ZPMC emphasised its commitment to expanding its portfolio in specialised vessels and offshore engineering, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance its engineering and manufacturing expertise. The company also aims to strengthen international shipping partnerships, signalling a strategic push to broaden its global presence in the maritime industry. This launch not only underlines ZPMC’s technological advancements but also reflects broader trends towards sustainable and efficient shipping solutions.
