Wildcat and EnergyX to build 15,000-tonne LFP cathode plant in Texas

Summary By: eMotoX
Wildcat Discovery Technologies and EnergyX have announced a joint venture to establish a large-scale lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode active material manufacturing plant in Hooks, Texas. The facility is planned to produce 15,000 metric tonnes annually and will be co-located with EnergyX’s Project Lonestar lithium extraction operation, adjacent to the Red River Army Depot. This venture represents a significant investment exceeding $230 million, with the companies seeking additional funding from the US Department of Energy to expedite the construction process. The project aims to address a key challenge in LFP production: the cost volatility of lithium precursors, which constitute the majority of the cathode material expenses. EnergyX is expected to supply most, if not all, of the lithium carbonate required for the plant at preferential rates, secured through negotiated price floors and ceilings. Furthermore, EnergyX controls approximately 50,000 acres of lithium mining rights near the facility, ensuring a stable domestic supply and reducing reliance on imported raw materials. Both partners bring considerable expertise and proven technologies to the collaboration. Wildcat, recently acquired by Holyvolt Group, will contribute its cathode formulation capabilities and high-throughput development platform, while EnergyX will focus on lithium extraction and refining. The site at TexAmericas Center offers strategic advantages, including rail access, established utility infrastructure, and proximity to defence installations, which could support future growth and integration with mobility and energy storage markets. The initial phase of the project targets an annual production capacity of 15,000 tonnes, positioning the venture as a significant player in the US battery materials supply chain. By combining domestic lithium resources with advanced manufacturing technologies, the joint venture aims to enhance supply security and cost competitiveness in the growing LFP market. The collaboration also aligns with broader efforts to develop localised battery supply chains critical to the electric vehicle and energy storage sectors.
