Waymo Rolls Out the Ojai!

Waymo has officially begun rolling out the Ojai, a new robotaxi model produced by Zeekr, for passenger trips. This marks a significant step forward from the Jaguar I-PACE vehicles previously used in their autonomous fleet. The Ojai features a more inviting and spacious design, with elevator-style doors and a flat floor that enhances accessibility and ease of entry, aiming to create a comfortable, “oasis-like” experience for riders. Although the interior appears less luxurious than some recent electric vehicles, the company emphasises its practical and rider-friendly layout. The vehicle incorporates several innovative features designed to improve the passenger experience. Inside, three large LED screens allow users to customise settings such as temperature and entertainment, while accessibility is a core focus with embedded braille, screen-reader compatibility, and integrated handles for support. These thoughtful touches reflect Waymo’s commitment to inclusivity and convenience, developed through extensive collaboration with riders and community partners. The Ojai is positioned as a next-generation autonomous vehicle that balances comfort with functionality. Underneath the new silhouette, the Ojai is powered by Waymo’s 6th-generation autonomous driving system, an evolution of the technology that has already completed over 20 million fully autonomous trips across more than 11 cities. This latest iteration is designed to handle more challenging environments, including snowy conditions, which will enable Waymo to expand its operational footprint. The rollout of this advanced driver system alongside the Ojai signals a maturation of Waymo’s self-driving capabilities. Perhaps most notably, Waymo is preparing to scale production significantly, with plans to manufacture tens of thousands of these vehicles annually at their factory in Mesa, Arizona.
