Waymo: Aim to Become “World’s Most Trusted Driver” and “New Reference Model for Human Collision Avoidance”

Waymo has unveiled a pioneering behavioural model designed to set a new benchmark for human collision avoidance in autonomous driving systems. Developed in collaboration with TU Delft and published in the journal Nature Communications, the Reference Driver (ReD) model simulates how a careful and competent human driver anticipates and responds to potential traffic conflicts. Unlike traditional models that focus on last-moment reactions, ReD captures the full cognitive process, including belief updating and proactive risk management, offering a more realistic and nuanced standard for evaluating autonomous vehicle safety. The ReD model builds on Waymo’s existing framework, incorporating principles from active inference—a neuroscience-based approach that models human behaviour as the minimisation of surprise. This enables the system to predict how drivers process uncertainty about other road users’ intentions and decide on evasive actions such as braking or swerving. The model’s scalability and automation allow it to be applied across diverse scenarios without relying on manual coding or annotations, facilitating large-scale virtual testing of complex crash situations with improved speed and accuracy. Experts from both academia and industry have praised the significance of this advancement. Arkady Zgonnikov of TU Delft highlighted ReD’s holistic representation of human collision response, while Professor Karl Friston, a leading neuroscientist and originator of active inference, described the research as a “tour de force” that equips autonomous systems with situational awareness akin to human drivers. Waymo’s Chief Safety Officer, Mauricio Pena, emphasised the model’s role in fostering a scientifically grounded, shared approach to assessing collision avoidance across the autonomous vehicle industry. This breakthrough has important implications for the future of autonomous driving safety. By providing a rigorous behavioural benchmark based on careful, confident human driving, ReD could help standardise how self-driving systems are evaluated and improved. Waymo’s work exemplifies the collaborative effort needed among researchers, regulators, and industry stakeholders to advance the reliability and trustworthiness of autonomous vehicles as they become increasingly integrated into everyday transport.
