Volvo CE enters serial production of A30 Electric and A40 Electric articulated haulers

Volvo Construction Equipment has commenced serial production of its A30 Electric and A40 Electric articulated haulers at the Braås plant in Sweden, marking a significant milestone as the first manufacturer to produce electric haulers of this size on a commercial scale. The A30 Electric offers a 29-tonne payload capacity, while the larger A40 Electric can carry up to 39 tonnes. Both models are capable of operating for up to six hours on a single charge, depending on the nature of their application, positioning them as viable alternatives to traditional diesel-powered machines in heavy-duty environments. The Braås facility holds historical significance for Volvo CE, having produced the original Gravel Charlie articulated hauler in 1966. Now, six decades later, it is pioneering the production of electric haulers in the same payload class, highlighting the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. Articulated haulers are typically used in energy-intensive sectors such as quarrying and mining, where continuous operation leads to substantial diesel consumption. The introduction of these electric models promises considerable reductions in emissions and offers potential savings in total cost of ownership for operators. Volvo CE anticipates first deliveries of the A30 Electric and A40 Electric to customers in the UK and Norway within the coming weeks, with further shipments planned for select European markets in the latter half of 2026. The company has reported strong customer interest since showcasing the machines at Bauma, with demand already exceeding initial production forecasts. Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE, emphasised that the launch demonstrates the readiness of electric solutions to meet the rigorous demands of heavy, high-productivity applications, signalling a broader shift towards electrification in the construction equipment sector. Fredrik Tjernström, Electromobility Solutions Sales at Volvo CE, noted that customer enthusiasm has been robust, indicating a growing market appetite for sustainable alternatives in heavy machinery. The move to electric articulated haulers not only aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions but also addresses operational efficiency and cost concerns in industries traditionally reliant on diesel power. As Volvo CE expands production and delivery, the success of these models could pave the way for wider adoption of electric technology across the construction and mining equipment landscape.
