VinFast Sees Opportunities in Philippine Electric Bus Market

Summary By: eMotoX
VinFast is closely observing the emerging electric bus market in the Philippines but has no immediate plans to introduce its electric bus models locally. Antonio “Toti” Zara, VinFast Southeast Asia’s CEO, emphasised that the company is evaluating opportunities where demand and supportive policies align with the transition to sustainable transport. While the Vietnamese manufacturer has a strong foothold in public transport electrification in its home market, it remains cautious about entering the Philippine bus segment until conditions become more favourable. VinFast’s experience in Vietnam is significant, having deployed 3,000 electric buses since 2019 as part of a broader effort to modernise public transportation. The company’s buses, manufactured under the Vingroup umbrella and operated by VinBus, have been instrumental in driving the country’s electrification agenda. Beyond Southeast Asia, VinFast is also expanding its presence internationally, recently showcasing new electric bus models at Busworld Europe 2025, signalling ambitions to grow in the European market. Zara highlighted the critical role of government policy in accelerating electric bus adoption in the Philippines, particularly through the establishment of designated “green routes.” Concentrating electric buses on specific routes can simplify the development of necessary infrastructure, such as charging stations and depots, which is more challenging when electric and internal combustion buses operate alongside each other. Success in this sector will depend on coordinated efforts among policymakers, transport operators, and infrastructure providers to ensure scalable and efficient deployment. The VinFast EB8 bus, a mid-sized vehicle designed for high-density urban routes, is particularly relevant for the Philippines due to its size and operational flexibility on narrower roads. However, it does not currently meet the country’s Utility Vehicles Modernization Program requirements, unlike the smaller EB6 model recently introduced in Europe. On the passenger vehicle front, VinFast is preparing to expand its electric vehicle lineup in the Philippines, including the upcoming MPV 7, a premium seven-seater SUV aimed at meeting growing consumer demand. In addition to passenger vehicles, VinFast is exploring opportunities in the commercial electric vehicle segment, which is seen as vital for urban sustainability and economic growth. The company recently launched the GREEN line, featuring light commercial EVs designed to support urban logistics and passenger mobility. While no specific plans have been announced yet, VinFast recognises the potential of this sector and benefits from the broader Vingroup ecosystem, which supports infrastructure and mobility solutions for electric vehicles.
