Viking introduces an electric motor coach for guest transportation in Vienna
Summary By: eMotoX
Viking, the renowned European river cruise operator, has unveiled its first fully electric motor coach, now in operation in Vienna. This new vehicle, designed to carry up to 49 passengers, will serve exclusively Viking guests, complementing the company’s existing fleet used for shore excursions in the city. The introduction marks a significant step in Viking’s ongoing commitment to sustainable travel, with plans to expand its electric coach fleet across Europe in the near future.
The launch builds on Viking’s previous environmental initiatives, including the adoption of hybrid diesel-electric engines and solar panels on some of its vessels since 2009. The electric coach aligns with the company’s broader strategy to reduce fuel consumption and minimise its carbon footprint. By integrating quieter, zero-emission vehicles into its operations, Viking aims to enhance the guest experience while supporting global efforts towards greener tourism.
Torstein Hagen, Viking’s Chairman and CEO, emphasised the company’s long-standing environmental concerns, highlighting the thoughtful design of their ships and the benefits of electric motor coaches. He expressed optimism about expanding the use of these vehicles to other Viking destinations, signalling a clear direction towards more sustainable transport solutions within the company’s shore excursion programmes. This move reflects a growing trend in the travel industry to adopt cleaner technologies and reduce environmental impact.
