Traton secures €850 million for investments in battery-electric trucks and buses

Summary By: eMotoX
The Traton Group, majority-owned by Volkswagen, has successfully raised €850 million to accelerate its investment in battery-electric drivetrains for commercial vehicles. This funding was secured through the company’s Green Finance Framework, introduced in 2025, which allows investors to specifically support projects related to battery-electric trucks and buses. The recent financing includes a €500 million green bond and a €350 million loan, marking Traton’s first transactions under this framework. The funds will be directed towards advancing the electric transformation across Traton’s brands, including MAN, Scania, International (USA), and Volkswagen Truck & Bus (Brazil). Despite the relatively low proportion of electric vehicle sales within the group, there are signs of gradual progress. In the first quarter of 2026, electric vehicle sales accounted for 1.4% of total sales across all brands, up from 0.9% in the same period the previous year. MAN has been a pioneer in this area, offering the battery-electric Lion’s City E city bus and recently launching the eTGX line of battery-electric trucks. Additionally, MAN plans to introduce the Lion’s Coach E, an electric coach, later this year. Scania has also made strides, securing an order for 91 electric buses for public transport in its hometown of Södertälje, demonstrating growing demand for electric commercial vehicles. Traton’s Chief Financial Officer, Dr Michael Jackstein, highlighted the significance of the green bond and loan as a milestone in the company’s financing strategy. He emphasised that these financial instruments translate the company’s electrification ambitions into tangible opportunities for investors, offering a transparent and credible way to support the transition to sustainable commercial transport. Jackstein noted that the transactions exemplify how green finance can be closely aligned with industrial transformation efforts at Traton, signalling a clear commitment to sustainable innovation. However, Traton’s green ambitions coexist with ongoing lobbying efforts alongside Daimler Truck and Volvo Truck to challenge stringent emissions standards in the US and Europe. The companies have filed a motion through the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association to defend the Trump-era Environmental Protection Agency’s repeal of the 2009 endangerment finding and related motor vehicle climate standards. This dual approach highlights the complex dynamics within the commercial vehicle industry as it balances regulatory pressures, environmental commitments, and business interests in the transition to electric mobility.
