Toyota to add new “flagship” option for its only EV in Australia

Toyota is set to broaden its electric vehicle offering in Australia with the introduction of a new flagship variant of its sole fully electric model, the bZ4X SUV. The bZ4X Touring will arrive in showrooms from May, priced from $69,990 before on-road costs, marking a $2,000 premium over the existing all-wheel-drive version. This new grade aims to enhance the model’s appeal by delivering improved performance, increased cargo capacity, and a higher ride height. The bZ4X Touring distinguishes itself primarily through its extended body, featuring an additional 104mm behind the rear axle and a more upright tailgate design. These changes have expanded the luggage space significantly, from 452 litres in the standard bZ4X to 603 litres in the Touring variant. Under the bonnet, the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system produces a peak output of 280 kW, enabling brisk acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, supported by a 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery offering a WLTP-rated range of 488 kilometres. In terms of equipment, the Touring model builds on the existing bZ4X AWD specification with unique styling and functional upgrades. It features distinctive 20-inch black alloy wheels, skid plates at front and rear, ladder-style roof rails, and black resin accents on the wheel arches and bonnet. Buyers can choose from six metallic and pearlescent paint colours, paired with either black or a new khaki synthetic leather upholstery exclusive to the Touring trim. Industry response to the updated bZ4X range has been positive, with reviewers noting that the improvements have made the vehicle more competitive and practical. Sam Parkinson from The Driven praised the entry-level bZ4X for its usability and overall refinement, suggesting that Toyota’s electric SUV has matured into a more compelling option within the growing EV market. The addition of the Touring variant is likely to strengthen Toyota’s position as it seeks to expand its electric vehicle footprint in Australia.
