Toyota Adds EVs To Its Lineup In US And China

Summary By: eMotoX
Toyota is accelerating its electric vehicle (EV) strategy in both the United States and China, signalling a significant shift from its historically cautious approach to electrification. The company recently announced a $1 billion investment to upgrade its Kentucky and Indiana plants, with $800 million dedicated to enabling the Georgetown factory to produce a second electric model alongside the Camry and RAV4. The next-generation Highlander, due in 2027, will be offered exclusively as an electric vehicle, marking a notable commitment to EVs in the US market. The identity of the second new EV remains uncertain, with speculation ranging from a Lexus luxury SUV to a Subaru-branded model. In addition to its US plans, Toyota is making substantial moves in China, where it unveiled the bZ7 sedan produced in partnership with GAC. Unlike traditional Toyota vehicles, the bZ7’s powertrain is supplied by Huawei, featuring the Drive ONE system that integrates the motor, inverter, and transmission. The car boasts impressive specifications, including a top speed of 180 km/h and a range of up to 710 km under the CLTC testing standard, powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries from CALB. The vehicle also incorporates advanced technology such as Huawei’s HarmonyOS 5.0 for the intelligent cockpit and a sophisticated driver-assistance system developed by Chinese firm Momenta. The bZ7 stands out for its competitive pricing, starting at approximately €18,490 for the base model and rising to around €25,000 for the top trim, making it an affordable option in the Chinese EV market. Its design blends elements reminiscent of Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y, with a spacious interior featuring zero gravity seats and a dual-chamber air suspension system for enhanced comfort. Despite its appeal and advanced features, there are currently no plans to export the bZ7 beyond China, which limits its potential impact on global EV markets. Toyota’s evolving EV strategy reflects a broader industry trend towards electrification, but with a distinctive approach that leverages partnerships and regional market strengths. In the US, the focus remains on expanding domestic production capacity for electric SUVs, while in China, collaboration with local technology companies like Huawei and Momenta enables Toyota to offer competitively priced, technologically advanced vehicles tailored to the market. This dual approach may position Toyota well as it navigates the transition from hybrid dominance to a fully electric future.
