The Rivian R2 Is Here!

Rivian has officially commenced public deliveries of its midsize R2 SUV, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion beyond its larger, more expensive R1 model. While private deliveries to staff and insiders began in April, the broader rollout started on 9 June 2026, with invitations to order being sent out to existing reservation holders on a staggered basis. The R2, positioned as a more accessible option, still carries a starting price of $44,990 for the base model, which is scheduled for delivery in summer 2027. Initially, Rivian is focusing on delivering the top-tier R2 Performance with Launch Package, priced at $57,990, before gradually introducing lower trims over the next year. The R2 Performance trim boasts impressive specifications, including a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0–60 mph sprint in as little as 3.6 seconds. Subsequent trims, including the R2 Premium and R2 Standard, will arrive progressively through late 2026 and 2027, providing a range of options for customers with varying budgets and preferences. Rivian’s ordering process for the R2 mirrors that of Tesla, with reservation holders receiving invitations to configure and place orders in waves, prioritised by reservation date and delivery location. Existing Rivian owners benefit from accelerated delivery schedules, balanced to maintain fairness across the customer base. The company also accommodates customers with expiring leases by considering their timelines when scheduling deliveries. Once an order is confirmed, customers can expect delivery within two to six weeks, with all reservation holders receiving estimated invitation timings by the end of June. The development of the R2 has been extensive, involving rigorous testing across diverse climates and terrains to ensure durability and performance. Built on a new midsize platform, the R2 is nearly 2,000 pounds lighter than the R1, with a shorter wheelbase that enhances urban manoeuvrability while retaining Rivian’s off-road capabilities.
