The Mercedes AMG GT Coupe Is An Absolute BEAST!

Mercedes has unveiled the AMG GT Coupe, a striking new electric performance car designed to combine imposing presence with cutting-edge technology. Unlike the company’s earlier EQXX and EQS models, which prioritised aerodynamic efficiency and range but lacked visual impact, the AMG GT Coupe is crafted to make a bold statement on the road. Its aggressive styling features a prominent shark-like grille with illuminated Mercedes emblems and distinctive light signatures, signalling a return to the brand’s traditional sporty and dominant aesthetic. Under the bonnet, the AMG GT Coupe delivers exceptional performance, with the top-tier GT 63 trim boasting 1,153 horsepower and 1,475 pound-feet of torque. This model accelerates from 0 to 60 km/h in just 2.1 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in 6.4 seconds, topping out at 300 km/h. A slightly less powerful GT 55 variant offers 805 horsepower and 1,328 pound-feet of torque. Both versions feature a synthetic sound system that replicates the iconic V8 engine growl, complete with realistic crackles and pops, enhancing the driving experience despite the car’s electric powertrain. The AMG GT Coupe’s impressive performance is made possible by advanced battery and motor technologies. The car uses a 106 kWh NMCA battery pack, developed with insights from Mercedes’ Formula One programme, which employs cylindrical cells immersed in coolant for efficient thermal management. This “on demand cooling” system ensures optimal battery temperature under extreme conditions, supporting consistent power output and longevity. The battery architecture supports ultra-fast charging of up to 600 kW, allowing the vehicle to recharge from 10 to 80 percent in just 11 minutes and gain approximately 285 miles of range in 10 minutes on compatible chargers. Another technical highlight is the use of axial flux motors supplied by UK-based YASA, a company Mercedes acquired in 2021. These motors are significantly lighter and more compact than traditional designs, contributing to the car’s performance and efficiency. The AMG GT Coupe marks the first production electric vehicle to incorporate this technology, underscoring Mercedes’ commitment to innovation in electric drivetrains. The car offers an estimated range of around 700 km (WLTP) or 315 miles (EPA), balancing power with practical usability. Pricing for the AMG GT Coupe will align with comparable predecessor models, ranging from approximately €158,800 to €179,000, targeting affluent buyers who value both performance and prestige. The GT 55 trim is expected to reach US dealerships later this year, with the GT 63 variant arriving in early 2027. Mercedes-Benz Group CEO Ola Källenius praised the car’s performance and driving dynamics, emphasising that the AMG GT Coupe genuinely stands out in the electric performance segment, combining thrilling speed with the brand’s signature presence.
