The FMC Elektron Is Now Beyond The Prototyping Stage

Francisco Motors Corp (FMC) has confirmed that its all-electric crossover, the FMC Elektron, has progressed well beyond the prototyping phase and is now moving towards commercialisation. Chairman Elmer Francisco revealed that the vehicle platform has already been tested in real-world conditions across several countries, including Turkey and the UAE, albeit in limited numbers. This approach marks a departure from FMC’s traditional focus on public utility vehicles in the Philippines, signalling the company’s ambitions to enter the broader electric vehicle market with a proven and validated EV platform. Rather than developing an entirely new architecture, FMC is refining and integrating an existing platform to align with its brand identity and engineering standards. The current phase centres on engineering enhancements, supplier alignment, and adapting the Elektron to the specific conditions of the Philippine market, where infrastructure and usage differ significantly from more mature EV regions. Francisco emphasised that while FMC retains control over the vehicle’s design and intellectual property, it is collaborating with specialised partners for battery systems, homologation, and compliance, reflecting the complex nature of EV development. The Elektron is being developed as a battery-electric vehicle with an ambitious target range exceeding 600 kilometres per charge, positioning it competitively within the current EV landscape. FMC’s focus on a battery-electric model reflects the limited hydrogen infrastructure in the Philippines, although the company continues to pursue hydrogen fuel cell research in the United States. FMC has expanded its presence in California to leverage the state’s advanced engineering talent, regulatory environment, and hydrogen ecosystem, which supports the development of next-generation technologies including fuel cells and eVTOL systems. Francisco highlighted four key reasons for FMC’s investment in California: access to deep engineering expertise, a robust supply and partner network, stringent regulatory standards that future-proof products, and an existing hydrogen infrastructure that enables practical testing. Additionally, proximity to capital and public-private support in California provides opportunities not readily available in the Philippines. This strategic move is intended to complement FMC’s local manufacturing efforts by building advanced capabilities abroad and applying that knowledge to future products like the Elektron. With the trademark registration for the Elektron now secured, FMC is poised to formally introduce the vehicle to the market. The company’s immediate priorities include finalising specifications, pricing, charging compatibility, and aftersales planning to ensure a successful rollout. The Elektron represents a significant step for FMC as it seeks to establish itself in the competitive electric vehicle sector while continuing to explore innovative technologies for the future.
