Tesla Semi electric truck tests out international markets

Tesla has commenced high-volume production of its Semi electric truck at the Nevada Gigafactory, nearly a decade after its initial reveal in 2017. The company is now actively pursuing expansion into international markets, particularly Europe, as evidenced by a recent job posting for a Business Development Manager based in Munich. This role will focus on cultivating relationships with European customers and transport operators, signalling Tesla’s intention to establish a foothold for its electric trucks beyond North America. The European market is expected to receive the latest iteration of the Tesla Semi, which has undergone significant updates since its initial deployment in the US. Notably, the truck now features a 48-volt electrical architecture and an all-electric steering system, replacing the older hydraulic setup. Tesla has also highlighted the Semi’s operational cost advantages, claiming it is 50% cheaper to run than comparable diesel trucks in California, alongside a notable reduction in downtime during trials, with 75% of services completed within 24 hours. Tesla offers the Semi in two variants: a Standard Range model with a 548 kWh battery providing over 500 km of range, and a Long Range version equipped with an 822 kWh battery capable of exceeding 800 km with a 37-tonne load. Both utilise Tesla’s advanced 4680 battery cells and support ultra-fast charging via the company’s proprietary Megachargers, which can deliver up to 1.2 MW of power. Production capacity at the Nevada facility is projected to reach 50,000 units annually, underscoring Tesla’s ambition to meet growing demand. The move to recruit for European operations represents a strategic step in Tesla’s broader plan to internationalise its Semi sales and leverage its manufacturing capabilities. If successful, this expansion could offer logistics and transport companies a compelling alternative to diesel trucks, combining lower running costs with reduced emissions. As Tesla continues to refine the Semi and build its global customer base, the electric truck market may witness a significant shift towards sustainable freight solutions.
