Tesla opens two new Supercharger stations, as fast charging costs hit new low of 27c/kWh
Summary By: eMotoX
Tesla has expanded its Supercharger network in Australia with the opening of two new stations, located in Braybrook, Victoria, and Osborne Park, Western Australia. These additions come shortly after the company reached the milestone of 150 Supercharger sites nationwide. Notably, the Osborne Park station features eight stalls equipped with Tesla’s latest V4 Superchargers, capable of delivering charging speeds up to 322 kW, while Braybrook offers four stalls rated at 250 kW each. Both sites are accessible to Tesla and non-Tesla electric vehicles, marking a significant step in broadening fast-charging infrastructure across the country.
The new stations have introduced exceptionally low charging prices, with off-peak rates dropping to as little as 27 cents per kWh for Tesla drivers at Braybrook, and 32 cents per kWh at Osborne Park. Non-Tesla EV users can also benefit from competitive rates, paying as low as 37 cents and 45 cents per kWh respectively, depending on membership status and charging times. These prices are considerably lower than many existing AC chargers and far cheaper than current petrol and diesel fuel costs, underscoring the financial advantages of electric vehicle ownership amid rising fossil fuel prices.
The rapid expansion of Tesla’s Supercharger network in Australia reflects a broader trend of accelerating EV infrastructure development. Since September 2024, when the 100th site opened in South Australia, the network has grown by over 40%, now boasting more than 1,000 charging bays nationwide. While much of the recent growth has been concentrated in New South Wales with government co-funding, Tesla’s latest openings in Victoria and Western Australia demonstrate a commitment to enhancing charging access across diverse regions.
Industry experts like Riz Akhtar, founder of Australian EV data platform carloop, highlight the significance of these developments in supporting the increasing adoption of electric vehicles. The availability of reliable, fast, and affordable charging is expected to boost utilisation of Tesla’s network and encourage further investment in EV infrastructure. As electric vehicle interest continues to rise, these advancements signal positive momentum towards a more sustainable and accessible transport future in Australia.
