Tesla hits record month of sales in May as Australia EV surge continues

Summary By: eMotoX
Tesla has achieved a new sales milestone in Australia, recording its highest-ever monthly sales with 6,443 vehicles sold in May. This surge in demand coincides with a broader increase in electric vehicle (EV) adoption across the country, driven in part by rising fuel prices and concerns over fossil fuel supply. Combined sales of Tesla and Polestar vehicles reached 6,681 units in May, marking a significant 61.4% increase compared to the same month last year and a remarkable 358% rise from April 2026. The strong performance is largely attributed to the popularity of Tesla’s Model Y, which accounted for 5,605 sales in May, positioning it as the best-selling EV in Australia once again. Tesla’s Model 3 also saw a substantial increase, tripling its sales from the previous year to 828 units. Polestar contributed to the growth with its Polestar 4 model, which saw a 52% rise to 202 sales, although other models like the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 experienced declines or stagnant figures. The arrival of nearly 5,000 EVs from Chinese manufacturer BYD is expected to further intensify competition in the Australian market. Industry leaders have welcomed the figures as a pivotal moment in Australia’s transition to electric mobility. Julie Delvecchio, CEO of the Electric Vehicle Council, highlighted how rising fuel costs are prompting more Australians to consider EVs as a cost-effective alternative, emphasising the financial savings and convenience they offer. Tesla’s country director for Australia and New Zealand, Thom Drew, pointed to the Model Y L’s unique six-seat configuration as a key factor appealing to families and fleet buyers, reinforcing Tesla’s commitment to delivering vehicles that meet diverse consumer needs. Looking ahead, the Australian EV market appears poised for continued growth, with further sales data expected from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries soon. Tesla’s year-to-date sales have increased by 56% compared to 2025, overcoming earlier challenges related to product rollouts and public relations issues. Meanwhile, Polestar is preparing for new model launches that could sustain its upward trajectory. The expanding availability of EV options, coupled with shifting consumer preferences, suggests that electric vehicles will play an increasingly prominent role in Australia’s automotive landscape.
