Tesla Expands Unsupervised Robotaxi Service To Whole Austin Metro Area

Tesla has expanded its unsupervised robotaxi service to cover the entire Austin metropolitan area, marking a significant geographic increase in its autonomous ride-hailing operations. The service now includes suburbs such as Pflugerville and Manor, as well as key locations like the I-35 highways, Gigafactory Texas, and Austin-Bergstrom Airport. This expansion represents the fifth extension of Tesla’s operational geofence since mid-2025, more than doubling the service area since October of last year. Despite the wider coverage, the growth in service area comes amid ongoing challenges related to fleet size and service quality. The number of unsupervised Tesla robotaxis in Austin appears to have decreased recently, with only around 20 vehicles currently active, down from 27 earlier in May. This reduction raises concerns that expanding the service zone without a corresponding increase in vehicles could result in longer wait times and diminished user experience. Tesla’s robotaxi service has faced criticism for being limited in scale, reliant on remote human supervision, and falling short of Elon Musk’s ambitious goal to cover half of the US population by the end of 2025.
