Swedish transport operator orders 91 Scania battery-electric buses

Swedish transport operator VR has placed an order for 91 battery-electric buses from Scania, marking a significant move towards sustainable public transport in the Södertälje region. These new vehicles, set to enter service from June 2027, will be based on Scania’s Fencer f1 BEV model, which utilises the company’s European-developed battery-electric bus platform. The fleet will comprise 32 buses with a 4×2 axle configuration and 59 with a 6×2 setup, all equipped with 445 kWh battery capacity to support efficient electric operation. The agreement between VR and Scania extends beyond the supply of vehicles, encompassing development, planning, ongoing vehicle servicing, and long-term support. This comprehensive partnership aims to ensure that the buses meet the operational needs of the region while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable urban transport system. The Södertälje area, home to Scania’s headquarters and production facilities, benefits from close collaboration throughout the project, allowing for tailored solutions that address both environmental and practical considerations. Anders Frykman, Bus Director at VR Sweden, emphasised the significance of the investment for the transition to electrified public transport, highlighting its role in reducing local emissions and enhancing the experience for both passengers and staff. Meanwhile, Christopher Svensson, Key Account Manager at Scania Sweden, pointed to the advantages of local development and battery assembly, which contribute to delivering a robust and sustainable transport solution. This order reflects a growing commitment within Sweden to electrify public transit and reduce the environmental impact of urban mobility. Looking ahead, the introduction of these battery-electric buses is expected to set a precedent for future electrification efforts in Swedish public transport.
