Brazil’s national electricity grid is predominantly powered by clean hydropower, which keeps its carbon emissions exceptionally low. Researchers warn that climate change threatens to undermine hydropower’s reliability, reinforcing the importance of diversifying with solar and battery storage. The growth of renewables in Brazil has been rapid, with wind and solar now accounting for nearly a quarter of the country’s electricity generation, up from under 10% just five years ago. Despite hydropower’s dominant role, its share in Brazil’s energy mix has declined due to reduced rainfall and increased demand, prompting a shift in its function from base load provider to a flexible reserve complementing variable wind and solar output. This evolving energy landscape not only enhances system resilience but also supports the broader goal of reducing fossil fuel dependence. The expansion of solar and battery microgrids in the Amazon represents a critical step towards sustainable development, improving energy access for remote communities while protecting one of the world’s most vital ecosystems.
