New York’s Sunrise Wind offshore project has reached a significant milestone with the installation of its first wind turbine, marking a major advancement for the 924-megawatt development off the coast of Long Island. This progress comes despite former President Donald Trump’s persistent attempts to halt the growth of the US offshore wind industry. The turbine installation, completed in mid-April, signals that Sunrise Wind remains on track to begin commercial operations by the second half of 2027, with the capacity to power nearly 600,000 homes amid rising energy demand. The Sunrise Wind project, located approximately 30 miles east of Montauk Point, is distinct from New York City’s jurisdiction, a fact seemingly overlooked by Trump in his recent public criticism of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Trump’s outburst on social media, which accused the mayor of "destroying New York," appeared unprompted and unrelated to the offshore wind development, suggesting a distraction from the mounting successes of offshore wind initiatives in the state. The project is one of several along the Atlantic coast that Trump unsuccessfully sought to block through legal challenges, all of which have continued to advance. Ørsted, the Danish developer behind Sunrise Wind, confirmed that construction efforts prioritise safety and remain on schedule. The company emphasised the importance of the project in meeting New York’s clean energy goals, following the earlier commissioning of the South Fork Wind farm in 2024 and the imminent turbine installations at Empire Wind 1. These developments collectively represent a growing offshore wind sector on the US East Coast, signalling a shift towards renewable energy despite political opposition. The installation was carried out by the specialised offshore construction vessel Wind Scylla, which had previously been engaged in turbine installations at the Vineyard Wind project off Massachusetts. The vessel’s arrival and work at Sunrise Wind were closely monitored by maritime industry observers, highlighting the methodical and well-coordinated nature of offshore wind construction. This steady progress underscores the resilience of the offshore wind industry in the face of regulatory and political hurdles.
