State’s fastest EV charging station opens on major highway, backed by a battery

Summary By: eMotoX
Western Australia’s South Western Highway has welcomed the state’s fastest electric vehicle (EV) charging station, featuring two 300-kilowatt (kW) ChargePost-branded bays. Situated in the town of Bridgetown, approximately 270 kilometres south of Perth, the new facility represents a significant upgrade in EV infrastructure for the region. The station is capable of fully charging most EVs in under 20 minutes, offering a convenient and rapid solution for drivers travelling through the South West. The project is a collaborative effort involving the Bridgetown Greenbushes Tourism Association (BGTA), the Shire of Bridgetown–Greenbushes, local lithium producer Talison Lithium, and the Western Australian government. Notably, the charging station operates entirely on solar power, supported by battery storage to ensure 24/7 availability. This sustainable energy approach aligns with the region’s commitment to clean transport and environmental responsibility. Local officials have welcomed the new charger as a boost for both the community and the local economy. Phil Beach, vice president of BGTA, highlighted the installation as a milestone for Bridgetown and the wider South West region, emphasising its dual role in promoting sustainability and enhancing tourism. Councillor Stephen Carstairs, president of the Shire, noted that the ultra-fast, solar-powered charger will encourage visitors to spend more time in the town, benefiting local businesses and community groups. Beyond its practical function, the charging station is integrated into a broader community hub that supports local initiatives such as Puzzletown6255, Landcare, and the annual Blues at Bridgetown music festival. The revenue generated from the charging site is expected to contribute funding to these organisations, further embedding the project within the social fabric of the area. This development marks a forward step in combining clean technology with regional development and community support.
