State puts out call for heavy EV charging hubs as part of fuel security plan

The New South Wales government has launched a call for proposals targeting projects worth $100 million or more to enhance fuel security across the state. This initiative, led by the Investment Delivery Authority (IDA), seeks to support developments that will strengthen local fuel supply, reduce dependence on imports, and foster new technologies. A key focus is on heavy electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, particularly hubs designed for commercial and freight vehicles such as rigid and articulated trucks, aiming to transition away from diesel reliance. The scope of the funding extends beyond electric vehicle infrastructure to include renewable fuels and their production feedstocks. Eligible projects may involve aviation fuels, renewable diesel, biodiesel, biomethane, and green ammonia, reflecting a broad approach to diversifying and securing fuel sources. The IDA’s inclusive definition of fuel security projects is intended to capture a wide range of innovations that can contribute to the state’s energy resilience and environmental goals. NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey emphasised the broader significance of the programme, framing it as both an energy security and cost-of-living issue. He highlighted the government’s intention to partner with investors to create jobs, strengthen supply chains, and mitigate the impacts of global fuel market disruptions. The dual approach of inviting Expressions of Interest alongside a Market Sounding process aims to identify projects ready for immediate development as well as those that could influence future investment strategies. The call for proposals remains open until 22 June 2026, providing a substantial window for industry participants to submit their plans. This move signals NSW’s commitment to accelerating the adoption of heavy EV technologies and renewable fuels, positioning the state as a leader in sustainable transport infrastructure. The initiative also aligns with broader trends in decarbonising freight and commercial transport sectors, which are critical to meeting climate targets and reducing environmental impacts.
