Scania lands it biggest ever electric bus deal
Summary By: eMotoX
Scania has secured its largest ever order for electric buses, agreeing to supply 91 battery electric Fencer F1 buses to VR Sweden. This deal stands as one of the biggest electric bus contracts in the country and will support VR Sweden’s upcoming operations in Södertälje and Nykvarn, following their successful bid to provide local bus services from 2025. The fleet comprises two configurations: 32 buses in a 4×2 layout and 59 in a 6×2*4 setup, all intended to meet the requirements of the new contract awarded by the public transport authority SL.
The buses are equipped with substantial battery capacity, featuring 445 kWh with 400 kWh usable energy, and offer rapid charging capabilities that allow them to recharge from 5 to 95 per cent in just 73 minutes. Although Scania has not disclosed the exact driving range, the charging rate corresponds to an addition of approximately 485 kilometres per hour of charge. This technical specification underlines the manufacturer’s commitment to delivering efficient and reliable electric vehicles suitable for demanding public transport routes.
Anders Frykman, bus director at VR Sweden, highlighted the significance of this investment in advancing electrified public transport. He emphasised that the new buses will contribute to reducing local emissions while maintaining high standards of service for passengers and providing a favourable working environment for drivers and maintenance staff. The deal also includes comprehensive vehicle servicing and long-term support from Scania, ensuring operational reliability throughout the contract period.
Scania’s production and development facilities in Södertälje play a crucial role in the partnership, with local battery assembly and close collaboration between the manufacturer and VR Sweden. Christopher Svensson, key account manager at Scania Sweden, pointed out that this proximity fosters a robust and sustainable solution tailored to the needs of the region. The contract not only marks a milestone for Scania but also reflects the growing momentum of electrification in public transport across Sweden.
