Sales of electric cars increase across much of Western Europe in April

Summary By: eMotoX
Electric vehicle (EV) sales continued to surge across Western Europe in April 2026, with Norway maintaining its position as the global leader in battery electric vehicle (BEV) market share. The Scandinavian nation set a new record with BEVs accounting for an extraordinary 98.6 per cent of all new passenger car registrations during the month, a slight increase from the previous record. This dominance is reflected in the minimal number of new petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles registered, underscoring Norway’s rapid transition to fully electric transport. Other countries in the region also experienced significant growth in EV adoption. Denmark recorded a BEV market share of 81.9 per cent in April, rising to 96.3 per cent among private buyers, marking a substantial increase from the previous year. Sweden saw BEVs make up 41 per cent of new car registrations, a 15 per cent rise compared to April 2025. Spain’s EV market expanded by 44.4 per cent, with BEVs representing nearly 9 per cent of new registrations, while electrified vehicles overall accounted for almost 20 per cent of the market. Similarly, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, and France all reported notable increases in BEV sales and market share, reflecting a broadening acceptance of electric vehicles across Western Europe. The resurgence of European car manufacturers in the EV sector was a prominent theme, with Czech brand Škoda and German giant Volkswagen leading sales in several countries. Škoda’s Elroq and Enyaq models topped the charts in Denmark, the Netherlands, and Ireland, while Volkswagen’s ID.4 and ID.3 were among the best-selling cars in Norway and Denmark. In contrast, Tesla’s sales were mixed; the brand struggled in some markets such as Denmark and the Netherlands but showed strong growth in Sweden and France, where the Model Y and Model 3 remained popular despite a quieter April. The sustained growth in EV sales across Western Europe highlights the accelerating shift towards sustainable transportation, driven by increasing consumer demand and expanding model availability from established European manufacturers. As governments continue to implement stricter emissions regulations and incentivise electric mobility, the market is poised for further expansion. The data from April suggests that electric vehicles are becoming mainstream choices for private buyers, signalling a significant transformation in the automotive landscape in the coming years.
