Rimac Technology to build BMW i7 battery system in Zagreb, marking first Gen6 cylindrical cell deployment

Rimac Technology has been commissioned to produce the battery system for BMW’s upcoming i7 electric vehicle, which is set to debut at Auto China 2026 in Beijing. This marks the first use of BMW’s new Gen6 4695-format cylindrical cells in a production vehicle, integrating these cells within a Gen5 module-based architecture. The collaboration between Rimac and BMW, formalised in 2023, represents a significant step in advancing battery technology for the German automaker’s fully electric models. The 4695 cylindrical cells, measuring 46 mm in diameter and 95 mm in height, are part of BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture, designed to enhance energy density, driving range, and charging capabilities. Rimac’s facility near Zagreb is responsible for the entire production process, having developed two full production lines and a comprehensive supply chain in a remarkably short timeframe. The dedicated area for the BMW battery programme covers 15,000 square metres within Rimac’s expansive 90,000 square metre campus, which is already heavily committed to battery system manufacturing for multiple automotive clients. Both companies emphasise the technological breakthroughs achieved through their partnership. Mate Rimac, founder and president of Rimac Group, highlighted the rapid development of a high-voltage battery system that maximises the potential of the new cylindrical cells, delivering notable improvements in key performance metrics. Meanwhile, BMW’s Thomas Engelhardt underscored the importance of the Neue Klasse technologies as they are integrated across the automaker’s model range, including the flagship i7 luxury sedan. This collaboration signals a broader shift in the electric vehicle industry, with traditional manufacturers increasingly partnering with specialised technology firms to accelerate innovation. The BMW i7’s battery system production in Zagreb not only showcases Rimac’s growing industrial capabilities but also sets a precedent for future electric vehicles utilising advanced cylindrical cell formats.
