Rheem’s Refreshed ProTerra Heat Pump Water Heater — Manufacturer Interview

Rheem has introduced a refreshed version of its flagship ProTerra heat pump water heater (HPWH), marking the fifth generation of the product since the company began manufacturing HPWHs in 2013. This latest update focuses on improving installation convenience, reducing noise, and enhancing the unit’s appearance. Notably, Rheem has responded to customer feedback by redesigning the control panel and other features to give the water heater a more modern, space-age look, reflecting a growing consumer interest in aesthetics alongside functionality. One of the key practical improvements in the new ProTerra model is the addition of both top and side water pipe connections. This design change addresses common retrofit challenges where existing plumbing often comes from above, allowing installers to avoid complex pipe rerouting and thus simplifying and speeding up installation. Rheem has also eliminated the need for a separate duct adapter by integrating duct connection tabs directly into the unit, making it easier to vent the system when required. Additionally, the new model operates at noise levels below 45 decibels, quieter than most dishwashers, demonstrating Rheem’s commitment to reducing operational sound. Rheem’s product range also includes pioneering innovations such as the 120-volt plug-in HPWH, launched in 2022, which allows for straightforward replacement of gas water heaters without the need for high-voltage electrical upgrades. This model has received positive feedback from field studies in different regions, highlighting its potential to accelerate the adoption of electric water heating in homes lacking 240V power supplies. Rheem also offers a unique 15 amp, 240V HPWH designed for homes with limited electrical panel capacity, providing a practical solution for builders and homeowners who want to avoid costly electrical infrastructure upgrades. The company is mindful of the need to balance advanced technology with affordability, recognising that highly sophisticated HPWHs can be prohibitively expensive for many consumers. To address this, Rheem is developing builder and utility models that retain the core efficiency of the ProTerra line but omit some premium features such as connectivity ports and leak protection. This strategy aims to broaden access to heat pump water heating technology, supporting wider market adoption and helping to meet growing demand for energy-efficient home appliances. Looking ahead, Rheem appears poised to continue innovating within the HPWH market, potentially expanding features on its plug-in models and refining its product offerings to suit a variety of installation scenarios and customer needs.
