Proton EVs Sell Well In Malaysia, Where Fuel Is Subsidized & Cheap

Summary By: eMotoX
Proton has recorded its strongest quarterly sales performance since 2004, delivering 49,140 vehicles in the first quarter of 2026, marking a 40.1 percent increase year-on-year. This growth is particularly notable given the overall Malaysian automotive market contracted by nearly 5 percent during the same period. The surge in sales signals a significant revival for the national carmaker, which has long faced challenges in maintaining its domestic market share. Proton is on track to capture 27.4 percent of the Malaysian market this year, its highest share since 2017, driven by a strategy that balances traditional petrol vehicles with a growing electric vehicle (EV) presence. Proton’s dual approach reflects the unique economic landscape in Malaysia, where subsidised and inexpensive fuel continues to anchor consumer preference for internal combustion engines. To navigate this, Proton has refreshed its conventional model range, including the popular Saga, which sold 21,770 units in the first quarter, while simultaneously launching the e.MAS sub-brand to target the emerging EV segment. The e.MAS 5 plug-in hybrid has become the country’s best-selling electric model, with 6,701 units sold year-to-date, positioning Proton as the leading EV brand in Malaysia for 2026. The brand’s March sales alone included over 3,000 units across electric and plug-in hybrid variants. The company’s rapid product development has been bolstered by technology transfers from China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, enabling Proton to introduce the e.MAS 7 plug-in hybrid, which sold 646 units in its first full month. This model is particularly significant in Malaysia’s market, offering a practical alternative for consumers hesitant about charging infrastructure but seeking improved fuel efficiency. Geely’s influence has also helped modernise Proton’s petrol lineup, with the S70 sedan becoming the best-selling C-segment vehicle in March. This synergy highlights Proton’s ability to manage multiple powertrain technologies while catering to diverse consumer needs. Proton’s leadership remains pragmatic about the country’s current reliance on subsidised fuel but is preparing for potential policy shifts. Proton Edar CEO Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa emphasised the importance of fuel-efficient, low-maintenance petrol models that provide a smooth transition path to electrification. The company’s success in both traditional and new energy vehicle segments has strengthened its financial position, enabling sustained investment in carbon-neutral technologies. By maintaining dominance in entry-level petrol cars and expanding its EV offerings, Proton has effectively insulated itself from future market fluctuations and secured its role as a key player in Malaysia’s automotive future.
