Preparing for lift-off: green fuel projects get a boost under ARENA program
Summary By: eMotoX
Australia is set to accelerate its transition to low-emission transport with a $1.7 million pilot programme aimed at advancing seven green fuel projects. The Green Fuels Accelerator, announced by advisory firm Cyan Ventures, will receive funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) alongside support from major aviation players Qantas and Boeing. These projects, spread across Queensland, Western Australia, and New South Wales, focus on developing sustainable aviation and maritime fuels, primarily by converting agricultural waste and ethanol into low-carbon alternatives.
The initiative targets projects that have yet to reach a final investment decision, offering tailored support including regulatory guidance, technical expertise, legal advice, and financial planning. Fraser Thompson, managing partner at Cyan Ventures, highlighted the complexities faced by pioneering teams in this sector, noting that even experienced founders often lack the full spectrum of skills needed to bring innovative fuel technologies to market. He emphasised the importance of demonstrating commercial viability to attract further investment and help scale these emerging solutions.
ARENA’s chief executive, Darren Miller, pointed to Australia’s natural strengths, such as abundant feedstocks and strong research capabilities, as key advantages in developing sustainable fuels. He stressed the need for targeted assistance to help promising projects overcome the final hurdles to commercialisation, enabling the country to meet growing demand from industries like aviation. This aligns with Qantas’s commitment to incorporating 10 per cent sustainable aviation fuel by 2030 as part of its broader goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Despite these efforts, sustainable aviation fuel remains a small fraction of global airline fuel use, with the International Air Transport Association projecting it will account for less than one per cent in 2026. The Green Fuels Accelerator aims to address this gap by nurturing early-stage projects and unlocking the potential for a rapid increase in production once initial commercial successes are achieved. The pilot programme represents a crucial step towards establishing a viable market for low-carbon fuels in Australia’s transport sector.
