PowerSled brings exportable power to the job site while saving space and fuel

PowerSled, a division of electric RV manufacturer Lightship, has introduced a powered work trailer that combines battery energy storage, propulsion assistance, exportable power, and solar integration. This innovative trailer is designed to reduce fuel consumption and extend the range of towing vehicles by actively assisting their propulsion. Unlike traditional powered semi-trailers aimed at freight transport, PowerSled targets work crews and commercial applications, offering a versatile solution that can haul equipment while supplying power directly to job sites without requiring additional vehicles or generators. The trailer is available in multiple configurations to suit various needs, including a stripped chassis for custom builds, a flatbed for tools and equipment, and an enclosed cargo version for sensitive payloads. It boasts a payload capacity of up to 8,700 lbs and a gross vehicle weight under 12,000 lbs. PowerSled’s battery system comes in three sizes—80, 160, or 240 kWh—and can deliver up to 38 kW of exportable power at 240 volts AC, supporting both Level 2 AC and DC fast charging through an NACS connector. Its TrekDrive propulsion-assist technology provides continuous motor output of 40 hp, with peaks up to 94 hp, enabling significant fuel savings or range extension for internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs). Ben Parker, co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer at Lightship, explained that PowerSled evolved from the company’s earlier electric towing and off-grid travel platform, the AE.1. By integrating cargo transport with energy storage, the system aims to streamline mobile power deployment in commercial environments, reducing the need for multiple vehicles and standalone generators at job sites. This approach reflects a broader shift towards electrification and efficiency in worksite logistics, offering a practical solution for industries requiring both transport and reliable power. PowerSled has already secured its first commercial customer, agricultural drone manufacturer Exedy Drones, which will use the trailer as a mobile charging and operations hub for drone-based crop monitoring and spraying. Scott Binder, Vice President at Exedy, highlighted the trailer’s ability to provide continuous power without the noise and emissions associated with traditional generators, signalling a new era in mobile energy solutions. This partnership underscores the potential for PowerSled to support emerging technologies and sustainable practices across various sectors. Looking ahead, PowerSled’s adaptable platform and advanced propulsion technology position it as a promising tool for remote job sites, utility projects, and emergency response scenarios. Its capacity to enhance vehicle efficiency while delivering exportable power could influence how mobile work environments are powered and managed, potentially reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
