Polestar reduces emissions per car sold by 31% over five years

The company positions itself in contrast to many traditional automakers, which have been criticised for their inconsistent environmental commitments and continued investment in combustion engines. Polestar emphasises its status as Europe’s only pure electric vehicle brand, committed to measurable progress rather than mere pledges. CEO Michael Lohscheller underscored the practical benefits of electrification, citing lower running costs, reduced emissions, and greater reliability amid fluctuating oil prices and fuel shortages. He suggested that as clean electricity becomes more widespread, electric vehicles will increasingly represent not only a sustainable choice but also a smarter one for consumers.
Looking ahead, Polestar is pursuing ambitious sustainability goals through its Polestar 0 project, which aims to produce a net-zero emissions car without relying on offsets by 2035, a revised timeline from the original 2030 target. Head of Sustainability Fredrika Klarén highlighted the company’s focus on eliminating emissions entirely, setting it apart from much of the automotive industry that continues to invest in hybrids and combustion engines. To support these efforts, Polestar has partnered with Swedish universities and companies to create Mission 0 House, a research centre dedicated to developing ultra-low-emission steel, bio-based textiles, battery materials, and technologies to convert CO₂ into new materials.
These initiatives underline Polestar’s commitment to driving innovation in sustainable manufacturing and material science. By collaborating with academic and industrial partners, the company is seeking to tackle emissions at every stage of the vehicle lifecycle. Polestar’s approach may serve as a model for other manufacturers aiming to reconcile growth with genuine environmental responsibility, particularly as regulatory pressures and consumer expectations around sustainability continue to intensify.
