Peninsula Clean Energy installs 92 EV chargers at a California affordable housing community

Peninsula Clean Energy has installed 92 electric vehicle (EV) chargers at Middlefield Junction, a newly developed affordable housing community in North Fair Oaks, California. The installation comprises 76 Level 1 chargers and 16 Level 2 chargers, tailored to suit the commuting requirements of residents. This initiative forms part of Peninsula Clean Energy’s EV Ready programme, which has so far delivered over 2,500 charging ports, predominantly in multifamily housing settings across San Mateo County and Los Banos. The EV Ready programme aims to support the expansion of EV infrastructure by offering technical assistance and financial incentives that reduce the costs associated with installing charging stations. It primarily promotes Level 1 chargers, which operate on 120 volts and are significantly cheaper to install compared to the faster Level 2 chargers that require 240 volts. Peninsula Clean Energy highlights that Level 1 chargers are sufficient for the daily needs of nine out of ten EV drivers in the Bay Area, while Level 2 chargers serve those with longer commutes or rideshare responsibilities. Tiffany Bohee, President of Mercy Housing California, emphasised the importance of integrating EV infrastructure into affordable housing projects. She noted that the partnership with Peninsula Clean Energy has provided Middlefield Junction residents with convenient and accessible home charging options, enhancing the quality of life and supporting sustainable transportation choices. This development reflects a growing recognition of the need to combine housing affordability with environmentally conscious amenities. The installation at Middlefield Junction signals a broader commitment to expanding EV infrastructure in underserved communities, potentially setting a precedent for similar projects in California and beyond. By prioritising accessible charging in affordable housing, Peninsula Clean Energy’s approach could encourage greater EV adoption among residents who might otherwise face barriers to ownership.
