Nouveau Monde Graphite secures $297 million to advance Canadian graphite mine project

Nouveau Monde Graphite (NMG) has secured a substantial $297 million financing package to advance its Phase 2 Matawinie Mine project in Canada. The funding comprises equity investments from the Canada Growth Fund, the Government of Québec via Investissement Québec, and Italian energy company Eni, alongside a public offering expected to raise approximately $84 million. This capital injection is designed to fully finance the graphite mine’s development, enabling NMG to move forward with its final investment decision and the commencement of construction. The involvement of Investissement Québec and the Canada Growth Fund continues their ongoing support for NMG’s efforts to develop a domestic supply chain for battery materials, reflecting the strategic importance of graphite in the electric vehicle sector. Eni’s participation is particularly notable, as it includes negotiations for a potential offtake agreement to purchase 15,000 tons per year of graphite concentrate or equivalent active anode material, highlighting the commercial interest in securing stable supplies of critical battery components. NMG has also made significant progress in project execution, with over half of the capital expenditure budget already committed through contracts and preparatory work underway on-site. In addition to the Matawinie mine, NMG has acquired a brownfield site adjacent to its greenfield property for the construction of the Bécancour Battery Material Plant. This facility aims to produce 13,000 tons of active anode material annually, with Panasonic Energy as a key customer. The company is currently updating its feasibility study and negotiating with equipment suppliers, targeting a final investment and construction decision by the second half of 2026. Shareholders Panasonic and Mitsui have expressed their support for the Matawinie mine transaction and have indicated an interest in investing further in the Bécancour plant. Their backing underscores the project’s alignment with the broader goals of securing sustainable, localised supply chains for battery materials in North America. With construction preparations advancing and significant financial backing secured, NMG is well positioned to contribute to the growing electric vehicle battery ecosystem.
