Norwegian ferry operator orders 20 Candela electric hydrofoil vessels

Summary By: eMotoX
Norwegian ferry operator Boreal has placed an order for twenty P-12 electric hydrofoil vessels from Swedish manufacturer Candela Technology. These vessels are set to transform commuting along Norway’s extensive fjord-lined coastline, where waterborne transport plays a vital role in daily life. The introduction of the P-12 aims to address the limitations of existing electric ferries, particularly the challenge of electrifying hurtigbåtar—high-speed passenger boats that serve rural routes but have traditionally relied on diesel power due to range and speed constraints. The Candela P-12 stands out by combining a cruising speed of 25 knots with a range of approximately 40 nautical miles, making it a practical electric alternative for routes previously dominated by diesel vessels. Its innovative design incorporates computer-controlled hydrofoils that lift the hull above water at speeds over 18 knots, significantly reducing drag and cutting energy consumption by around 80 percent compared to conventional vessels of similar size. This technology has already proven successful in Stockholm’s public transport system, demonstrating its viability in real-world operations. Boreal’s CEO, Nikolai Knudsmoen Utheim, emphasised that the P-12 is unique in offering both high speed and extended range without the need for extensive charging infrastructure. The vessels can recharge fully within an hour using standard DC fast chargers, avoiding the costly megawatt-scale systems required by larger electric ferries. This capability is expected to facilitate the introduction of new high-speed routes in both urban and rural settings, enhancing connectivity across Norway’s challenging coastal geography. Candela’s European Director, Alexander Sifvert, highlighted the broader benefits for passengers and the environment, noting that the new vessels will provide a quieter, smoother journey free from seasickness and without the wake and emissions that can damage the fragile fjord ecosystems. This development marks a significant step forward in sustainable maritime transport, promising improved service frequency and reduced environmental impact for Norway’s ferry networks.
