Norway’s EV share at 97.8 pct in May, as Tesla leads Toyota and VW
Summary By: eMotoX
Norway’s electric vehicle (EV) market continues to demonstrate exceptional growth, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for 97.8 per cent of new passenger car registrations in May 2026. This sustained dominance has helped maintain an overall EV market share of 98 per cent for the first five months of the year, according to data from Opplysningsrådet for veitrafikken (OFV), the country’s road traffic information council. In May alone, 15,560 new passenger cars were registered, marking a 9 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2025.
Tesla remains the leading force in Norway’s EV market, capturing a 21.5 per cent share of new registrations in May, largely driven by the popularity of its Model Y, which accounted for just over 20 per cent of all new cars registered. Toyota and Volkswagen followed as the next most popular brands, with Toyota securing second and third positions through EV models not yet available in Australia. Volkswagen’s electric ID series also performed strongly, occupying several spots in the top six best-selling vehicles.
The dominance of Tesla’s Model Y highlights the continued appeal of certain flagship models, yet the broader market is diversifying with an expanding range of EV offerings from various manufacturers. This diversification suggests a maturing market where consumers have increasing choice beyond the early dominance of a few key players. Norway’s experience presents a valuable case study for other countries aiming to accelerate EV adoption and reduce reliance on internal combustion engines.
Looking ahead, the data underscores the potential for EVs to become the norm in passenger vehicle markets, particularly in regions with supportive policies and infrastructure. As manufacturers expand their electric portfolios and competition intensifies, the Norwegian market is likely to remain a bellwether for global EV trends. Continued monitoring of registration figures and market shares will provide insight into how quickly other nations might replicate Norway’s transition to electric mobility.
