Nivalis acquires SolarEdge e-Mobility to advance electrification of TRUs
Summary By: eMotoX
Nivalis Energy Systems has taken a significant step in advancing the electrification of Transport Refrigeration Units (TRUs) with its acquisition of SolarEdge e-Mobility, a European manufacturer specialising in electrified trailers. TRUs, which traditionally rely on inefficient diesel generators, are prime candidates for electrification due to the availability of shore power at many loading and unloading sites. Nivalis’s existing TRU-Power solution uses battery systems to provide electric refrigeration, enabling refrigerated trailers to operate for extended periods with minimal grid dependence, and has already seen deployments across North America since 2023.
The acquisition of SolarEdge e-Mobility brings valuable engineering and research capabilities to Nivalis, including access to a third-generation platform that integrates battery storage, rooftop solar photovoltaic panels, and regenerative e-axle technology. This combination of technologies promises to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of electrified refrigerated transport. Furthermore, the deal opens the door for Nivalis to expand its market reach into Europe by leveraging SolarEdge’s established presence and service network, signalling a strategic move towards global growth in the electrified transport refrigeration sector.
Sam Plunkett, CEO of Nivalis Energy Systems, emphasised the pressing need to move away from diesel-powered refrigeration within the cold chain, citing the high operational and maintenance costs associated with diesel systems. He highlighted that the primary challenge has shifted from proving the viability of electrified refrigeration to educating fleets about the commercial and operational benefits these systems now offer. This reflects a broader industry trend towards sustainable logistics solutions driven by both economic and environmental considerations.
Government incentives in parts of North America further bolster the case for electrified TRUs, with some programmes covering up to 100% of the costs involved in transitioning to electric refrigeration systems. Such financial support is likely to accelerate fleet adoption and contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of refrigerated transport. As Nivalis integrates SolarEdge’s innovations and expands its geographical footprint, the electrification of TRUs appears poised to become a more accessible and attractive option for logistics operators worldwide.
