New Tesla Model Y variant with more range specs spotted in approval documentation
Summary By: eMotoX
Tesla has introduced a new variant of its Model Y SUV that boasts an extended driving range, initially launched in China last November. This Long Range rear-wheel drive version offers an impressive 821 km according to the CLTC cycle, making it one of the longest-range electric SUVs available. Recently, documentation submitted for European regulatory approval has revealed this variant, designated with an “8L” battery pack code, signalling Tesla’s intention to bring this model to European markets and potentially to Australia.
The new Model Y variant builds on Tesla’s recent expansions in the Model Y lineup, which now includes a six-seater Model Y L with over 680 km of range under the WLTP standard. This increase in range is attributed to a larger battery pack and improved aerodynamics. In Australia, Tesla currently offers four versions of the Model Y, ranging from the single-motor rear-wheel drive with 520 km of range to the Performance all-wheel drive model. The Long Range AWD model, which delivers around 600 km, is currently the highest range option available locally.
If the European-approved Long Range RWD Model Y with the 8L battery pack arrives in Australia, it could push the range closer to 700 km on the WLTP cycle, surpassing existing variants. This would represent a significant advancement for electric SUVs in terms of range, potentially appealing to drivers concerned about range anxiety, especially those switching from internal combustion engine vehicles. Pricing is expected to be competitive, possibly undercutting the AWD Long Range model, which could make it an attractive option in the Australian market.
Tesla’s regulatory filings also highlight the inclusion of advanced driver assistance features, such as Full Self-Driving supervised approval and safety systems that ensure the vehicle can stop safely if the human supervisor fails. These technologies underline Tesla’s ongoing commitment to integrating cutting-edge autonomous capabilities alongside improvements in battery performance and vehicle efficiency. Observers and potential buyers will be watching closely for official announcements regarding the model’s availability outside Europe, particularly in Australia.
Riz Akhtar, founder of Australian EV data specialist carloop, emphasises the importance of such developments for the local market, noting that longer-range electric vehicles are crucial to reducing transport emissions and addressing consumer concerns about electric vehicle practicality. As Tesla continues to innovate and expand its Model Y range, the arrival of this new variant could mark a significant milestone in the evolution of electric SUVs both in Australia and globally.
