NEW: Sierra Club Tool Shows Deadly Impact of Coal on Public Health Across the Country

The Sierra Club has launched a new interactive web tool that highlights the deadly health impacts of coal pollution across the United States. The tool, titled "Out of Control: The Deadly Impact of Coal Pollution — 2026," offers detailed data on a county, plant, and utility level, revealing that coal-fired power plants contribute to approximately 6,500 premature deaths annually. This resource aims to provide a clearer picture of the widespread and severe health consequences caused by coal emissions, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, developmental disorders, and cancer. The release of this tool comes amid ongoing regulatory rollbacks under the Trump administration, which has reduced public health protections and extended the operational lifespan of coal plants. Notably, the administration has ceased factoring public health costs into regulatory decisions, a move that critics argue will exacerbate pollution-related health problems. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrating coal’s harmful effects, government policies have favoured the coal industry through taxpayer-funded subsidies and bailouts, undermining efforts to curb emissions and protect communities. Laurie Williams, Director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, strongly condemned the administration’s approach, accusing it of prioritising industry profits over public health. She emphasised that coal pollution is directly responsible for increased illness and premature death, and criticised the government for providing financial support to coal companies while families face rising electricity bills and health risks. Williams called for urgent action to defend clean air and water, underscoring the need to shut down coal plants and enforce stricter emissions limits. The "Out of Control" tool builds on data from the Clean Air Task Force’s "The Toll From Coal" project, offering a complementary perspective by mapping the geographic spread of coal pollution’s health impacts and identifying the most harmful plants and responsible utilities. This detailed analysis is intended to empower activists, policymakers, and the public with the information needed to advocate for stronger environmental protections and a transition to cleaner energy sources.
