Network giant trials its first electric prime mover and heavy duty charger with battery

Australia’s largest electricity distributor, Ausgrid, has commenced trials of its first electric prime mover alongside an innovative heavy vehicle charging system that integrates grid connection with battery storage. The trial vehicle, a Volvo FH Aero Electric prime mover, is capable of hauling loads exceeding 30 tonnes over routes from the Upper Hunter region to Southern Sydney. With a range of up to 400 kilometres and rapid charging capabilities of up to 350 kW, the electric truck is reportedly matching the performance of traditional diesel vehicles without compromising productivity.
The charging infrastructure, developed by Australian start-up Hub Zero Energy and supplied by Grid Rig, addresses common barriers to heavy vehicle electrification by combining a standard grid connection with on-site battery storage. This design aims to circumvent costly and time-consuming grid upgrades, enabling rapid installation within hours. Hub Zero Energy’s CEO, Mahan Perera, highlighted that this approach simplifies the deployment of charging stations, reducing both the financial and logistical challenges typically associated with heavy vehicle electrification.
Ausgrid has received positive feedback from drivers, who have praised the electric prime mover for its quieter operation, smoother handling, and greater comfort compared to diesel trucks. Nigel Lowry, Ausgrid’s Group Executive for property, logistics, and governance, emphasised the significance of this trial as a milestone in the company’s fleet electrification efforts. He noted that the electric truck has proven capable of transporting substantial loads reliably, operating effectively alongside the existing diesel fleet.
The trial represents a crucial step in exploring how electric heavy vehicles can support essential services within the energy sector. Ausgrid aims to gather valuable insights into the practicalities of integrating electric trucks into its operations, potentially informing broader adoption strategies.
