Michigan achieves NEVI fully built out status, unlocking $51 million in additional funding for public EV charging
Summary By: eMotoX
Michigan has successfully completed the initial buildout phase of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, earning full certification from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This achievement marks a significant milestone, as the state has met the requirement to install fast-charging stations along designated highway corridors. With this status, Michigan has unlocked the remaining $51 million of its total $106 million NEVI allocation, allowing for more flexible deployment of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has been actively deploying NEVI-funded charging stations, with 83 locations established across the state following the first two rounds of funding. The newly approved fiscal year 2026 EV Infrastructure Deployment (EVID) Plan enables MDOT to address broader priorities beyond highway corridors. These include filling geographic gaps, improving charger reliability, enhancing the user experience, and expanding support for medium-duty vehicles and fleet charging.
MDOT is preparing to launch a third round of funding applications and is seeking public feedback to guide future infrastructure development. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that the expanded EV charging network meets the needs of a diverse range of users and supports Michigan’s transition to electric transportation. The state’s progress under the NEVI program positions it as a leader in EV infrastructure deployment within the United States.
Looking ahead, the additional funding and flexible use of resources could accelerate Michigan’s efforts to build a comprehensive and reliable EV charging network. This will be crucial in supporting the growing adoption of electric vehicles and meeting federal climate and transportation goals. The state’s experience may also serve as a model for other regions aiming to optimise their NEVI funding and infrastructure strategies.
