MG reveals new small electric SUV with “liquid-solid state battery”
Summary By: eMotoX
MG has unveiled a new small electric SUV, the MG 4X, which is set to launch in China within the coming months. The vehicle features the company’s innovative “liquid-solid state battery,” a technology that combines 95% solid electrolyte with a 5% liquid component, promising enhanced energy density, improved safety, and more consistent power delivery. The 4X is designed with a modern aesthetic that echoes MG’s existing models, such as the MG4 Urban hatch and the MG S5 electric SUV, sharing both exterior styling cues and interior layout elements.
The MG 4X measures approximately 4.5 metres in length and is expected to be competitively priced at under A$22,000 in China, making it an attractive option in the small electric SUV segment. It offers a 54 kWh battery pack capable of delivering up to 510 km on the CLTC cycle, which translates to an estimated 400 km under the WLTP standard. There is also a larger 64 kWh battery option supplied by CATL, which extends the range by around 100 km. Powertrain options include a single rear-mounted motor producing 125 kW in the base model and a 150 kW motor in the top-tier variant, enabling acceleration from 0-100 km/h in roughly eight seconds.
Inside, the 4X adopts a minimalist and user-friendly cabin design, featuring a sizeable central touchscreen complemented by a reduced number of physical buttons compared to previous MG electric vehicles. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel provides essential driving information, enhancing the overall driver experience. MG’s promotional messaging highlights the vehicle’s focus on comfort, smart connectivity, and suitability for family travel, positioning the 4X as a practical and modern electric SUV.
Looking ahead, the MG 4X is expected to begin sales in China soon, with international exports, including to markets such as Australia, anticipated to start in 2026. Should the pricing in Australia remain below A$35,000, the model could quickly gain traction in the competitive EV market. Its combination of advanced battery technology, practical range, and accessible pricing positions the MG 4X as a noteworthy contender in the expanding electric SUV segment.
