Mexico Unveils Olinia Uno, A “Coche Del Pueblo” Starting At $8600

Summary By: eMotoX
Mexico has taken a significant step towards establishing a national electric vehicle with the unveiling of the Olinia Uno, a compact, affordable electric car set to enter production in 2027. Priced from $8,400, the Olinia Uno aims to become the modern equivalent of the Volkswagen Beetle for Mexico, providing an accessible and practical transportation option. While its design is utilitarian rather than flashy, the vehicle offers seating for six and ample cargo space, targeting commercial and taxi services where cost efficiency is paramount. The project is being developed through a public-private partnership model intended to combine government resources with private sector expertise and capital. This collaboration is inspired by Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission’s infrastructure partnerships and aims to produce 50,000 units by 2029. Roberto Capuano, head of Project Olinia, highlighted the importance of private management for operational efficiency and revealed ongoing negotiations with multiple business groups to support the initiative. A key priority for Project Olinia is fostering domestic manufacturing, with a goal of achieving 75 percent local content in the vehicle’s components. The initiative seeks to move Mexico beyond contract manufacturing towards proprietary design and engineering, building a local technical ecosystem to complement existing capabilities. The Olinia Uno will feature an LFP battery pack with cells initially imported, but the battery assembly and integration will be carried out in Mexico, with plans to develop domestic cell production in the future. Designed primarily for urban commercial use, the Olinia Uno promises significantly lower operating costs compared to conventional vehicles or motorcycles, thanks to the efficiency of electric powertrains, especially in stop-and-go city driving. The Mexican government is also working on a dedicated regulatory category for low-speed urban vehicles to keep production costs low and maintain affordability. This regulatory approach draws on international micro-mobility standards to better suit the vehicle’s intended use. Looking ahead, Project Olinia is viewed as a foundation for a wider micro-mobility and electrification industry in Mexico. Officials see the initiative as a catalyst for developing a domestic supply chain encompassing batteries, motors, electronics, and auto parts, which could support further projects and companies. Plans are already underway to introduce a cargo version of the Olinia Uno by mid-2027 to serve urban freight and last-mile delivery markets, signalling ambitions to expand into new segments and markets in the future.
