Merino Energy Comes Out Of Stealth With $3,800 Heat Pump System, At Our Coming Hawaii Electric Home Show
Summary By: eMotoX
Merino Energy, a San Francisco-based climate hardware company, has emerged from stealth mode with the launch of its first product, the Merino Mono, a professional-grade home heat pump system priced at $3,800 including installation. Designed to simplify and reduce the cost of home electrification, the Merino Mono addresses significant barriers to heat pump adoption by eliminating the need for outdoor units and complex electrical upgrades. The system installs in under an hour through a simple through-wall ventilation connection, running on a standard 120V outlet, making it accessible to a wider range of homes, including condos, older properties, and apartments that typically cannot accommodate traditional mini-split systems.
Heat pumps are widely recognised as a key technology for reducing carbon emissions in residential heating and cooling, with ambitious targets such as California’s goal of six million installations by 2030. However, the high cost and installation complexity of conventional systems have hindered progress, leaving millions of households without viable options. Merino Energy’s innovation lies in its compact, all-in-one indoor unit that delivers 7,500 BTU of heating and cooling capacity for spaces up to 350 square feet, matching the performance of traditional mini-splits but without the associated infrastructure challenges. This approach promises to transform heat pump retrofits from lengthy, disruptive projects into quick, straightforward upgrades.
The company’s cofounder and CEO, Mary-Ann Rau, highlighted the personal experience that inspired the product’s development, citing the difficulties and expense of installing conventional cooling systems during a heatwave. She emphasised the need for a customer-centric design that also simplifies the installer’s role. To enhance user experience, the Merino Mono features paintable wall vents to blend with home exteriors, automated airflow louvers, a dishwasher-safe air filter, and quiet operation. It offers flexible control options, including a remote, smartphone app, voice commands, and integration with Apple HomeKit and Google Home, with future plans to connect to wearable devices for sleep optimisation.
Merino Energy has also reimagined the installer experience to boost efficiency and profitability. By offering a transparent flat-rate price and a rapid installation process that requires no refrigerant handling or electrical upgrades, the company aims to increase quote acceptance rates and reduce time spent on unsuccessful sales. This model enables certified technicians to complete multiple installations per day, expanding capacity and opening access to households previously underserved by conventional heat pump systems. The Merino Mono will be showcased at the upcoming Electric Home Show in Honolulu, signalling the company’s initial market focus and commitment to direct consumer engagement.
