Key Toyota supplier commissions a 2 megawatt solar carport to slash electricity costs

JTEKT Corporation, a key supplier to Toyota, has commissioned a 2-megawatt solar carport at its facility in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, aiming to significantly reduce electricity expenses. Covering 640 parking spaces, the installation is expected to generate around 2,500 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, which should translate into nearly 40 per cent savings on the company’s power costs. The project was completed in just five months and operates under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Peak Energy, a Singapore-based clean energy developer with extensive assets across Asia and Australia. The timing of the solar carport’s launch is particularly relevant given the recent surge in fossil fuel prices driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Japan’s heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels has made energy costs a pressing concern for manufacturers, and JTEKT’s approach offers a practical solution. By utilising existing parking infrastructure, the company minimised disruption to its operations and avoided the need for additional land, presenting a scalable model for other Japanese industrial firms facing similar space constraints. Beyond cost savings, the solar installation supports JTEKT’s environmental commitments, contributing to its goal of reducing CO₂ emissions by 60 per cent by the fiscal year 2030 compared to 2013 levels. The company anticipates the project will cut approximately 1,090 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to removing 230 cars from the road. This initiative underscores the growing role of renewable energy in Japan’s industrial sector as companies seek to balance economic and environmental priorities. The collaboration with Peak Energy highlights the increasing importance of long-term power purchase agreements in facilitating clean energy adoption. With over 300 MW of operational assets and a further gigawatt in development, Peak Energy’s involvement signals a robust market for solar infrastructure in the region.
