Janus Electric is making significant strides in the electrification of heavy trucks, particularly through its innovative approach of converting existing diesel trucks to electric powertrains. Drawing on his background in energy transition and software platforms for utilities, Hutt emphasises the company’s commitment to practical, scalable solutions that meet the needs of truck operators. He acknowledges competition from cheaper Chinese electric trucks but stresses that Janus Electric’s niche lies in extending the life of existing vehicles, offering rapid conversions that allow operators to maintain their preferred trucks while transitioning to zero emissions. This approach resonates with truck drivers’ attachment to their vehicles and supports a zero-waste transition. Janus Electric is also engaged in developing specialised solutions for diverse applications, including partnerships with companies like Fortescue Metals in Western Australia to electrify heavy mining vehicles. The company is working on lighter motors suitable for urban trucks hauling up to 70 tons, reflecting its ambition to cover a broad spectrum of trucking needs. Despite early challenges in scaling operations and standardising technology, Hutt reports that recent organisational changes and funding have positioned Janus Electric for growth, moving beyond pilot projects to a more robust commercial phase.
