Issues with Tesla’s Robotaxi “Rollout” in Texas

Tesla’s much-anticipated robotaxi service in Texas is facing significant operational challenges, casting doubt on the ambitious rollout plans announced by CEO Elon Musk. Despite predictions that Tesla robotaxis would serve half of the US population by the end of 2025, the current trial phase in cities such as Dallas, Houston, and Austin reveals a service still very much in beta. Reporters testing the service encountered long wait times, limited availability, and inefficient routing, with some trips taking hours for journeys that would normally last minutes. Key issues include frequent navigation errors and inconvenient drop-off locations, sometimes requiring passengers to walk considerable distances to reach their destinations. In Dallas, for example, a reporter experienced a two-hour trip for a five-mile journey and was dropped off 15 minutes away from the intended endpoint. Similar problems were reported in Houston and Austin, where wait times often exceeded 15 minutes, and cars were sometimes unavailable altogether. These operational shortcomings highlight ongoing reliability and efficiency concerns with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. Safety concerns have also emerged amid the rollout. Tesla robotaxis have been involved in 15 accidents, with at least one serious enough to hospitalise a passenger. Unlike competitors such as Waymo, Tesla has requested that crash data be withheld from public records, raising transparency questions. Austin police have noted that the robotaxis tend to speed, a practice Tesla defends by arguing that matching human driving behaviour is safer, a stance met with criticism from law enforcement officials. The current state of Tesla’s robotaxi service suggests that the company still faces considerable hurdles before achieving widespread deployment. The combination of technical glitches, safety incidents, and public scepticism indicates that further development and regulatory scrutiny will be necessary.
