Hyundai unveils Ioniq V, its first EV dedicated for huge China market

Hyundai has introduced the Ioniq V, its first electric vehicle designed exclusively for the Chinese market, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion strategy in the region. The unveiling coincides with Hyundai’s broader plan to launch 20 new models in China over the next five years, underlining the country’s importance as a key market for the South Korean automaker. The Ioniq V is the inaugural production model of Hyundai’s Ioniq brand tailored specifically to meet Chinese consumer preferences. The Ioniq V draws inspiration from Hyundai’s Venus Concept car but features a distinct design that differs notably from the Ioniq 5 sold in other markets such as Australia. Measuring 4,900mm in length with a 2,900mm wheelbase, the vehicle emphasises spaciousness and comfort, highlighted by a 27-inch ultra-thin 4K panoramic screen and a Horizon head-up display. Its exterior styling incorporates a “single-curve silhouette” with a Kammback rear, blending aerodynamic efficiency with a modern aesthetic reminiscent of both the Tesla Model Y and Toyota Prius. Technical details remain limited, but Hyundai has revealed that the long-range version of the Ioniq V will offer over 600 kilometres of range under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). The vehicle will also feature advanced technology, including a large language model-based Smart AI Assistant powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chipset, enabling intuitive voice control of key functions. Additionally, Hyundai has partnered with AI firm Momenta to integrate sophisticated driver assistance systems, enhancing safety and convenience. Looking ahead, Hyundai plans to expand its electric vehicle lineup in China with the launch of another SUV model in the first half of next year. This will be followed by a broader rollout of midsize to large vehicles, encompassing both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), signalling a comprehensive approach to electrification in one of the world’s largest automotive markets. Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and localisation reflects its ambition to strengthen its foothold in China’s rapidly evolving EV sector.
