Hyundai Motor & TVS Motor Formalize Partnership to Drive Electric Three-Wheeler Commercialization in India
Summary By: eMotoX
Hyundai Motor Company and TVS Motor Company have formalised a Joint Development Agreement to co-develop and commercialise electric three-wheelers (E3Ws) tailored for the Indian market. This partnership aims to address last-mile mobility challenges in India, leveraging Hyundai’s expertise in human-centric design and advanced mobility technologies alongside TVS’s strong electric three-wheeler platform and deep local market knowledge. The collaboration follows the positive reception of their E3W concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 and marks a significant step towards sustainable urban transportation solutions in India.
The jointly developed E3W will be engineered specifically to meet India’s unique road and climatic conditions, with features such as adaptive ground clearance for monsoon-affected roads, enhanced safety systems, ergonomic design for longer journeys, and flexible interiors suitable for passenger transport, goods delivery, and emergency services. Hyundai will lead the design and co-development process, while TVS will oversee local manufacturing, sales, and after-sales support, ensuring the vehicle is optimised for Indian infrastructure and consumer needs. Both companies have committed to localising major component production within India to strengthen the domestic automotive supply chain, reduce costs, and improve service availability.
Senior executives from both companies highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership. Joongsun Ko, Senior Vice President at Hyundai Motor, emphasised the collaboration as a strategic move to improve India’s transportation environment by providing safer and more sustainable mobility options. Sharad Mishra, President of Group Strategy at TVS Motor, noted the alliance as a fusion of complementary strengths that will set new standards in technology, quality, and customer experience, reinforcing their shared ambition to transform last-mile mobility in India and beyond.
Looking ahead, the partnership will focus on transitioning the E3W from concept to production, including rigorous testing, localisation refinement, and certification to meet Indian regulatory standards. Dedicated cross-functional teams from both companies have been established to expedite development and regulatory approvals. This initiative aligns with Hyundai’s global vision of “Progress for Humanity” and TVS’s commitment to sustainable, responsible mobility, positioning the electric three-wheeler as a key innovation for India’s evolving urban transport landscape.
