Hyundai Motor Reaffirms China Commitment at Auto China 2026, Unveils IONIQ V as First Step in New Product Offensive
Summary By: eMotoX
Hyundai Motor has reaffirmed its strong commitment to the Chinese market at Auto China 2026 by unveiling the all-new IONIQ V, the first dedicated model under its IONIQ electric vehicle (EV) brand tailored specifically for China. This move is part of Hyundai’s broader ‘In China, For China, To Global’ strategy, which positions China not only as a vital market but also as a strategic hub for innovation and global competitiveness in the rapidly evolving EV sector. The company plans to launch 20 new models in China over the next five years, signalling an ambitious product offensive focused on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs).
Hyundai’s renewed China strategy is underpinned by a substantial investment of 8 billion yuan in its joint venture with BAIC Group, Beijing Hyundai, agreed upon in late 2024. This funding supports the localisation of product development and deeper integration with China’s advanced innovation ecosystem. The company aims to leverage this partnership to meet the demands of China’s sophisticated EV consumers and accelerate growth, with a target of 500,000 vehicle sales annually. The IONIQ V launch is the first step in expanding Hyundai’s electrified lineup in China, with further SUV models and midsize to large segment vehicles expected by 2027.
The IONIQ V itself embodies Hyundai’s new design language, ‘The Origin,’ and is engineered to deliver a premium, intelligent driving experience tailored to Chinese customers’ preferences. The vehicle offers a spacious and versatile interior, enhanced connectivity, and a driving range exceeding 600 kilometres on a single charge according to the CLTC standard. Its sleek exterior design features aerodynamic elements such as frameless doors and floating mirrors, emphasising both style and efficiency. This model represents Hyundai’s commitment to combining global engineering with local innovation to meet the unique needs of the Chinese market.
Executives from Hyundai and Beijing Hyundai emphasised the strategic importance of China in shaping the future of mobility. José Muñoz, Hyundai Motor’s President and CEO, highlighted China’s role as the epicentre of electrification and innovation, describing the company’s intensified focus on the market as its most ambitious chapter yet. Li Fenggang, President of Beijing Hyundai, underlined the IONIQ V as a symbol of respect for Chinese consumers and a demonstration of Hyundai’s resolve to lead in the global EV arena through localised products and cutting-edge technology.
Looking ahead, Hyundai’s comprehensive product rollout and investment plan in China are expected to strengthen its market position and enhance export opportunities. The company’s strategy reflects a broader trend among global automakers to deepen localisation and innovation in China, recognising the country’s pivotal role in the future of electric mobility. Hyundai’s efforts to tailor its EV offerings to Chinese tastes and infrastructure could set new standards for premium electric vehicles both domestically and internationally.
