Hyundai Mobis develops 160 kW EV drive system with 16% higher specific power and 20% volume reduction

Hyundai Mobis has unveiled a new 160 kW Power Electric (PE) system designed as a universal platform to serve multiple global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Unlike traditional powertrain components tailored to specific vehicle models, this system integrates the motor, inverter, and reduction gear into a single unit, offering up to 215 horsepower. The modular design allows for scalability, with the option to combine two units for a total output of 320 kW, making it suitable for a wide range of electric vehicles currently in mass production. The latest PE system marks a significant improvement in efficiency and compactness compared to Hyundai Mobis’s previous offerings. Specific power, measured as output per unit weight, has increased by approximately 16%, while the overall volume of the system has been reduced by nearly 20%. These advancements have been achieved through standardisation of core components, including the drive motor stator, inverter, and power module, alongside a new motor cooling structure. This approach enables the same architecture to be adapted across different vehicle classes without the need for a complete powertrain redesign. Hyundai Mobis’s strategy contrasts with the conventional model where automakers co-develop bespoke components with individual suppliers. By offering a standardised platform, the company aims to streamline production and reduce development time for EV manufacturers. The 160 kW system complements a previously developed 250 kW high-performance PE system and a 120 kW model intended for compact vehicles and emerging markets, expected to be completed by mid-2026. This comprehensive lineup positions Hyundai Mobis as a versatile supplier across the full spectrum of electric mobility. The announcement has already garnered interest from overseas customers, signalling strong market demand for flexible and efficient EV drive solutions.
