Hyundai Ioniq 6 N is a track-ready, performance monster – even without the drift

Hyundai has introduced the Ioniq 6 N, a high-performance electric sedan that builds on the success of the Ioniq 5 N with significant enhancements tailored for track enthusiasts. Unlike the Ioniq 5’s SUV form, the Ioniq 6 N benefits from a more aerodynamic and lighter sports sedan design, featuring reinforced chassis components that increase torsional stiffness by nearly 20 per cent. The car’s aggressive styling is further accentuated by an optional carbon fibre body kit, which not only improves downforce but also distinguishes it visually from the standard Ioniq 6.
Under the bonnet, the Ioniq 6 N shares the same 84 kWh battery and dual motor setup as the Ioniq 5 N, delivering up to 478 kW and 770 Nm of torque with the N Grin Boost activated. Thanks to its lighter weight and improved aerodynamics, the sedan achieves a WLTP range of up to 487 km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, shaving 0.2 seconds off its predecessor’s time. The vehicle’s suspension and electronic limited-slip differential have been extensively revised, offering a distinct driving character that Hyundai claims is more track-focused and engaging.
Driving the Ioniq 6 N at Sydney Motorsport Park revealed its impressive blend of raw power and handling finesse. Even for less experienced drivers, the car proved approachable with its suite of adjustable drive modes and electronic aids. The author noted the car’s strong grip and continuous acceleration beyond 220 km/h, praising its ability to maintain power at high speeds—a trait not always found in electric vehicles. While the N Drift Optimiser mode was not tested to preserve tyre life, the car’s other features such as N e-Shift and N Pedal offered a broad scope for driver customisation and performance optimisation.
Charging capabilities also support the Ioniq 6 N’s track-ready credentials, utilising Hyundai’s 800 V E-GMP platform to achieve rapid replenishment from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes on a 350 kW charger. Hyundai positions the car as both a thrilling track machine and a refined daily driver, with further road impressions forthcoming from extended test drives. The Ioniq 6 N is now available to order in Australia starting at $115,000 AUD, with a range of optional performance accessories including lightweight forged wheels and carbon fibre aerodynamic parts offered separately.
